Class Experience Levels

Level 1—No prior quilting experience. Need to know how to use your sewing machine.

Level 2—Basic piecing skills. Should know how to rotary cut and sew a ¼" seam.

Level 3—Confident piecing skills.

 

 


Class Registration & Cancellation Policy

   To reserve a place in a class, the fee must be paid at the time you register.

   Payment must be in cash or check payable to the class instructor.

   You may cancel up to 3 days in advance of the class for a class credit or refund.

   Credit will not be given for no-shows or cancellations less than 3 days before the class time.

If a class is cancelled due to lack of participation, a class credit or refund will be issued.

Supply lists will be available at time of registration.

Please remember that classes are for YOU—there is no child care available.

 We don't want anyone to get a parking ticket -
8 hour parking is available in the lot across from Luigi's.

The A, B, C’s

Beginners On Your Mark                                     Level 1

Are you new to quilting?  In this class you will learn to use your rotary cutter and ruler, master a perfect ¼ inch seam, and learn proper pressing techniques.  We will piece a few small blocks and try our hand at half square triangles. After this class, you’ll have the  experience to take other quiltmaking classes and complete your first quilt project with confidence.

Introduction to Free Motion Quilting  Level 1

In this class, you will learn to quilt loops, curves, designs, free motion straight lines and simple stipple by using your home sewing machine. You will learn the art of Heirloom free -motion quilting. Today’s quilts are  tomorrow’s heirlooms.

Beginning Hand Appliqué                          Level 1

Do you love the look of appliqué but it remains a mystery?
Appliqué is very versatile and not that hard to do.
This class will take a look at several methods, all of which
have common techniques. We will be using Elly Sienkiewicz’s
 book,
Appliqué 12 Easy Ways, and starting the charming small
heart quilt. Once you have the techniques, appliqué work is
 relaxing, fun, and portable. (book required)

Quilt Your Quilt, Design Layout         All Levels

Take your quilt top from “just a top” to a finished quilted heirloom of tomorrow. Learn to select the right designs for your top, properly lay them out and make them fit. Batting types, proper layering, marking tools and more will be discussed.

Hand Piecing                                               Level 1

Learn to hand piece a block and you can take your
work (really it is fun) with you anywhere you go.
This is the most precise way to piece a block, get sharp
points, and lovely curves. Some people say it is faster
because you can take it anywhere they go so it fits into
a busy life. This is a one block class, not a project.

      Tuck Away Tote                                         Level 2

In this class you will learn to make this fun little/big bag that folds into its own pocket for convenient stowing…then expands to a roomy 20” x 22” tote anytime you need it.  (pattern required)

    Geese in Flight                                        Level 2
 
   A wonderful and graphic quilt, this "Geese in Flight"
  is easy enough for the beginner, but still interesting
  enough for the experience quilter.. This quilt is a
  reproduction of an 1870's quilt which looks modern
  enough to have been made today! The 7 inch blocks
  are set on point and the "geese" are flying north in a
  classic pyramid reminiscent of what we see in nature.
  This sparkly quilt uses a myriad of scrappy patches for
   the geese. Come join Catherine for another scrap
   quilt wonder! (pattern provided)

Bella, Bella                                               Level 3

In a quilt inspired by the tile mosaics of Italy, and designed by Nora McMeeking,  Kathy will walk you through every step of paperless paper piecing, curved piecing and machine appliqué  as you create your own magical optical illusion.  This 65 x 65 inch medallion quilt is guaranteed to take your breath away. (book required)

Whole Cloth Circles                               Level 2

This is your opportunity to create stunning  art pieces with inset circles from two to nineteen inches. No more worry about curved piecing with this simple and clever technique designed by Phillips Fiber Arts.  Crescent moons, partial circles and fractured images will be explored.  Kathy will walk you step by step through design, fabric placement and piecing those circles.  And, no more heavy pinning, this technique only uses 8 pins.  (book & ruler required)

Landscapes in Contemporary Design       Level 2

Are you intrigued with landscape quilts but don’t know how to start to create your own? Using a simple landscape photograph or an idea of your own, even the novice quilter can begin to transform their ideas into unique pieces of art.  We will utilize a variety of mediums to accomplish our goals.  Nothing is off limits. Your class fee includes  all meals   (book required)

Come solve the mystery and construct a stunning

This fun mini quilt looks complicated but it is really the same block  repeated using a paper piecing technique you will find it fun and easy to put together. (pattern Required)

Skill Building Sampler                              Level 2     
 
In earlier years a quilter would try out a new block or technique by making a sample block. We will be doing the same thing in these four sessions. This is not a project class but after you have made your blocks you may set them as you wish. We will discuss various setting and borders.  (book required)

July 12, 10:30 –3:30 “Machine Piecing” making and using templates, constructing units, rows and blocks. Maintaining sharp points and other tricks of the trade.

August 30, 10:30-3:30  “Hand Piecing”  The ancient yet still contemporary skill of hand piecing. There is no better way to get perfect blocks. You can piece difficult blocks you would not attempt by machine. Plus it is portable.

September 27, 10:30-3:30 “Quick Cutting and Piecing” Speeding up the process: Fabric preparation, cutting, speedy strips and triangles, assembly line piecing.

November 1, 10:30-3:30  “Advanced Techniques”  Set in seams and curved seams. Freezer paper templates.

Dear Jane Club                                       Level 2

You have started your very own Dear Jane quilt and know the basics, but you would like company along for your journey? This is a once a month get together with old friends and new. We will share  techniques and ideas. You should have  a good idea of how to construct the blocks. You will be  working on blocks of your choice.

BOM Block Help                                            Level 2

For anyone who’d like a little extra help with the more challenging BOM blocks, the new block tool and/or require assistance with the design layout elements.

This charming  wall hanging utilizes modern techniques to create  a traditional style of mini blocks, precision piecing  and primitive shapes. This appliqué is “do-able”! Different techniques will be discussed. (Pattern required)

Mini Whole Cloth Quilt                        Level 2

This class will focus on more elaborate designs and how to stitch them properly. Students will learn beautiful feather designs and background stitches and will come away with a wall hanging or designer pillow.

Trapunto                                                     Level 2

Trapunto by machine is a simple to learn process of double stuffing your quilt motif to add dimension to your quilt. Many useful background designs will also be explored. You will make a design suitable for a pillow front or wall hanging.

Black Bird Lane                                              Level 2

 Here is a beautiful folk art wall hanging using scrappy piecing and generous appliqué . Both hand  and machine appliqué instruction is provided as well as how to make continuous bias tape. This project can be done with fusible web as well. (pattern required)
